Doctor Who Scarf

CROCHETED DOCTOR WHO SCARF

m

This pattern is for the 4th Doctor’s scarf in the original colour sequence (as made for my son, a Doctor Who fan!) The original scarf was over 12 feet long. In this pattern I have slightly shortened each colour section, resulting in a much more practical overall length of 10’ 8”- still pretty long but not so long you would constantly trip on it!! It is 12 inches wide.

If you’d like to make this scarf in all its original 12-feet-long glory, simply crochet each colour section the corresponding number of inches as shown in this page from the very informative DoctorWhoScarf.com website: http://www.doctorwhoscarf.com/pdf/inches.pdf . If you’d like to make my shortened version, see below for the number of rows to do in each colour!
I have seen versions of this scarf in both SC and DC (US terms). I decided to use HDC (US) throughout as I felt it gave the scarf a bit of texture- somewhat reminiscent of the original knitted scarf in garter stitch.

You will need:

Stylecraft Special DK in the following colours:

·         Camel (2 skeins)
·         Burgundy (1 skein)
·         Khaki (1 skein)
·         Lipstick (1 skein)
·         Sunshine (1 skein)
·         Graphite (1 skein)
·         Copper (1 skein)

I purchased my yarn from Sconch Textiles in the UK (http://www.sconchtextiles.co.uk/ ). They have a ‘Doctor Who Colour Pack’ containing one skein of each of the above colours. But please note that for this size of scarf you will need an extra skein of the camel.
A size 4mm crochet hook
Darning needle and sharp scissors

The pattern:

Note: initial chain of 1st row and turning chains throughout pattern do not count as stitches

Using the Burgundy colour, ch51.

1st Row: HDC in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch1, turn work anti-clockwise (this gives the neatest edge) (50 HDC)
2nd row: HDC in each stitch across. Ch 1, turn.

Repeat 2nd row until you reach the end of the scarf, using the following colours for the stated number of rows:

·         Burgundy: 3

Finish off and weave in ends.

The Fringe:

Make 26 tassels (13 tassels for each end) as follows:
Cut 26 12-inch lengths of each colour. I found the easiest method was to get a paperback book 6 inches long, and then wrap each colour around the length of the book 26 times, and then cut at one end.
Arrange the cut yarn into 26 groups of each of the 7 colours. Fold each bunch of yarn in half.
Pull each bunch of yarn at the looped end evenly between the stitches of the first and last rows (you can use a length of yarn to pull it through), then thread the cut ends through the looped end and fasten securely. Each tassel will be about 4 stitches apart (sometimes 3).

NOW ENJOY YOUR SCARF!!!!!
